YOUTH FOR CHRIST (YFC) IN THE CAMPUSES:
A BACKGROUNDER

Rationale

God created the family to be a means by which His kingdom can be propagated here on earth. The family, however, is under attack by evil and divisive forces which put the Christian life of families in danger. This situation causes the family to lose its guidance from the Holy Spirit and its personal relationship with Christ. The importance of the youth in this struggle becomes clearer because of the roles that they take in the family and the future of our society and the church.

There is an ongoing battle for the hearts and minds of the young people today. We see the values of the youth being wrongly influenced  by different sectors of society (e.g. promotion and toleration of such issues like abortion, pre-marital sex, rebellion to family and to the authority of parents). It is for these reasons that Youth for Christ (YFC) exists.

Massive Evangelization of the Youth

We realize in order to counter these threats, there has to be a massive evangelization and re-evangelization of the youth today. Every young person today should know the joy of receiving the gift of salvation and living a dynamic personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This however, is not easy, because of the many distractions, pressures and diversions that are pulling young people away from the plan of God.

The traditional means of attracting young people to the Christian life no longer appears to be effective. As Bishop Ted Bacani says in his book on Evangelization, "What is needed is a creative approach to the evangelization of young people that understands their nature, interests, needs and gifts." Cardinal Sin, in his message to YFC on September 19, 1994 stated, "The way to evangelize young people of today is through people their own age."

YFC as a Means of Evangelization

Relying on the wisdom of this direction, YFC finds itself effective in the evangelization of the youth as it provides:

  • A point of re-conversion where a young person grows as a man or woman of God, where he/she will be encouraged to take responsibility and exercise his/her leadership skills.

  •
  • A program that accepts the vibrancy, energy, dynamism and free spirit of the youth, as part of growth; that rechannels the rebellious characteristic of the young people to active submission to the plan of God; that positively contributes in building his/her family, school and country.

    Having YFC in our School Will Mean...

  • The network of Couples for Christ (CFC) nearest the school will be committed to support the program and school with whatever resources available (i.e. speakers, parents-youth fora, training, etc.)

  •
  • Teaching/training manuals will be made available to the school.

  •
  • Being invited to participate in all YFC regional, national and international conferences.

  •
  •  Students in our school will be eligible to participate in the YFC National and International Mission Exchange Program.

  •
  • CFC and its other ministries [such as Singles for Christ (SFC) - for single professionals/workers; Handmaids of the Lord (HOLD) - for single mothers, widows, wives of overseas workers, single matured women;] will be made available. They will be an environment that will support parents and faculty of school-based YFC groups. This will also give them a fuller appreciation of God’s plan for the Christian family.

    Description of the Youth for Christ Program

    YFC is a family ministry of the Couples for Christ (CFC). It is a means of renewing young adults and of providing a venue where they can respond to God’s call to holiness. YFC is open for membership to all youth from 12 to 22 years of age.

    The Philosophy of Youth for Christ

    We in Youth for Christ believe,

    That God is calling everyone to a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus Christ;

    That this call is not exclusive but shared with all sectors of society, regardless of age, color, nationality, status and beliefs in life;

    That the youth have a very special place in God’s heart, and that they in return have a very deep sense of love for God, and that a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is something they desire;

    That the youth have a vibrant, energetic, dynamic and free-spirit nature. Rather than denying this nature and force the youth into a mold that satisfies our own perception of Christianity and holiness, we accept his nature, not curtailing it, but re-channeling, into an active expression of submission and participation to the plan of God;

    That the youth who have detached themselves from God have not done so just because of their own liking or plan, but also because of societal deficiencies in family life, education and government structures;

    That the youth are full of ideas and are blessed by the Lord with talents; That the youth are in need of friends and role models, and therefore should be given the opportunity to develop these skills and relationships in a healthy Christian environment;

    That the youth realize the need to make decisions in life; but they should also know that as they do so, God should always be an inseparable part of these decisions; knowing also that they are future leaders of families and societies, we realize that this future depends on how they are molded today as God’s children;

    That the youth are responsible as long as they are given the appropriate amount of guidance, trust and loving care;

    That the youth grow not only from what they receive, but more through what they are able to share with others;

    That the youth are at the forefront of a spiritual battle, and that the evil one knows just as much; That the deception by the evil one, intended to confuse, mislead, and even initiate the youth into his evil plans, comes in the form of day-to-day experiences in family life, relationships, values and practices, language and ideals;

    But, we also believe, that as the plan of God unfolds, there is nothing and no one that can separate us from His love in Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:38-39). His love is our source of wisdom and his life becomes our model in helping build this present and future life for the youth.

    Our Philosophy is a statement of victory for Christ’s youth. It is a declaration of active submission to the will of God - primarily believing that the true purpose in life is to serve God above all things.

    The Logo

    The YFC logo includes three different symbols: the cross, the dove, and the letters Y and A.

  • The letters Y and A stand for Young Adult, the term that identifies the age group or stage of the members.

  •
  • The cross sybolizes Christ for whom the members live and acknowledge as Lord.

  •
  • Finally the dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit. Referring to our call to "live in the power of the Holy Spirit, renewing the face of the earth."
